Bacteria Prevention Tips

Our team here at All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach have a few tips to make your February perfect this year. Drs. Julie Boulos, D.D.S. and Joseph Boulos, D.D.S. believes that healthy mouth, gums, and teeth will help make every day a special one.

  1. Sharing a straw over a milkshake made for two might seem harmless, but in reality, is a great way to share bacteria. Saliva contains bacteria that can cause cavities. All forms of germs can be transferred through saliva too. Make sure your romantic partner doesn’t have a stuffy nose, or you might be next! Brushing twice a day for at least two minutes will help keep any and all bacteria away.

  2. Worried about your breath? Don’t be! Invest in some mouthwash in order to stay fresh. Bacteria is the biggest culprit of bad breath. Over-the-counter antimicrobial mouthwash or sugarless chewing gum should do the trick.

  3. If you’re staying over at someone’s place, always remember to bring your own toothbrush. If your significant other doesn’t have a spare, they can be bought relatively cheap at most stores. Sharing toothbrushes is a sure fire way to also share germs.

  4. If you’re worried your smile’s not up to par, contact our team at All Coast Dental to talk about teeth whitening. Drs. Boulos use what is referred to as a tray whitening system. There are two steps to this process. First, an impression of your teeth is taken. With this mold, custom reusable whitening trays are created for you. At home, place whitening gel into your trays and place on the teeth for a short period of time. Results will begin to appear over the following days. Don’t be afraid to show off that smile!

  5. Show your teeth some love and quit smoking. Not only is it bad for your breath and your teeth, but it’s terrible for your overall health. Smokers are more at risk for oral cancer and gum disease.

The best holiday actually comes twice a year: your bi-annual dental appointment! Visit All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach, CA, or call us today at 858-270-4904 to set up an appointment with Drs. Julie Boulos, D.D.S., and Joseph Boulos, D.D.S. You can also make an appointment on our website, www.artisandentalmn.com.

Seal Out Cavities with Dental Sealant

Children are prone to cavities but dental sealant can help prevent them. At All Coast Dental, our doctors use dental sealant – a thin coating that is painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth to protect against decay. Though brushing and flossing remove leftover food particles, it may not always be easy for your child to do a thorough job. Sealants are usually applied as a preventive measure to keep the mouth cavity free.

Brushing and flossing may remove plaque from the teeth, but sometimes extra measures need to be taken. Dental sealants add extra protection to vulnerable areas of the teeth that are prone to decay. When bacteria become trapped in these areas, cavities will develop. Dental sealant is a safe and effective way to stop them in their tracks. Don’t hesitate to ask about dental sealants during your child’s next checkup.

Drink Water to Save Your Teeth

Fluoride is nature’s natural cavity fighter and can be found in the water that we drink. Choosing water over sugary beverages is a much better decision for your teeth. Water cleans the mouth with every sip, and because of this, our doctors at All Coast Dental encourage you to drink more to protect your teeth from decay. Water not only strengthens teeth, it delivers healthy nutrients to our bodies to keep us healthy.

If your dental health is a cause for concern, drinking more water may be the solution. Sugary beverages may wash down your meal, but they provide no nutritional benefits for tooth enamel. Drinking water, however, washes away leftover food particles that have been left behind. It also dilutes the acids produced by harmful bacteria in the mouth. Drinking water may improve your smile, but it won’t protect against cavities alone. Be sure to maintain a rigorous oral hygiene routine to protect your teeth from decay.

Sugar and Tooth Decay

Most of us indulge in our fair share of sugary beverages, but those sugary drinks are harming our smiles with every sip. Considering that the average can of Coca-Cola have 10 teaspoons of sugar, our doctors at All Coast Dental encourages patients to limit sugar intake to avoid tooth sensitivity and to protect teeth from tooth decay.

Food and beverages that contain sugar create acid attacks that are harmful to tooth enamel. This is because the plaque that is left on teeth use sugar to thrive and stick to the tooth’s surface. Though children are more prone to cavities caused by sugar, this doesn’t mean adults are out of the woods. To protect teeth from decay, keep your mouth as clean as possible by drinking water, or low-acidic beverages such as milk. Additionally, you should be practicing proper oral hygiene and visit us twice a year for dental checkups.

Cavity Characteristics

There are two main factors that contribute to cavities. One is bacteria in the mouth and the other is a diet that is high in sugar. It’s no surprise that cavities are common among children, but changes that occur with aging, make cavities an adult problem, too. To prevent cavities from occurring you should brush and floss on a daily basis, in addition to scheduling professional cleanings at All Coast Dental twice a year.

Cavities, or tooth decay, are the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Tooth decay is heavily influenced by lifestyle, what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth, and the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste. Only your dentist can tell for sure if you have one because sometimes cavities cause little to no pain at all. Regardless of how and where they occur, the best way to spot them and treat them before they become serious is by visiting our doctors at All Coast Dental for checkups.

If you are experiencing tooth pain of any kind, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options.
