What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease or gum disease is an infection that targets the tissues holding your teeth in place. Periodontal disease develops when plaque, a type of bacterial film, accumulates, and hardens on the teeth. The primary cause of this condition is poor dental hygiene, particularly a lack of brushing and proper flossing.

How Laser Dentistry Works

At All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach, CA, we pride ourselves in making every experience pleasant and comfortable for our patients. Our laser treatments are no different. Your trusted dentist will use a dental laser to remove infected tissue from the root of your teeth. One the infected tissue is removed, your dentist begins root scaling or scraping off the built-up plaque in your gumline. After the root is smoothed down to prevent future infections, the pocket is sealed using laser energy.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Treating periodontal disease with laser dentistry has a variety of benefits such as:

-Non-invasive procedure

-Minimal pain

-Short recovery period

-Preserves healthy parts of the teeth

-Lowers risk of bacterial infections

-Limits bleeding

Do You Have Periodontal Disease?

Did you know that it’s abnormal for your gums to bleed while brushing your teeth? Your hands shouldn’t bleed when you wash them, but many people seem to think that bleeding from the gums is normal. In actuality, this is a sign of an underlying issue. We at All Coast Dental dedicate our time and expertise to educating our patients about good oral health. Your Pacific, CA dentist will help you achieve that smile you’ve been longing for.

If your gums are swollen and bleeding, these are signs of the beginning stages of periodontal disease known as gingivitis. The gums have been infected with bacteria-infested plaque, which is usually caused by poor dental hygiene or pre-existing conditions. Periodontitis is the advanced stage of the disease, where the teeth can actually be loosened and fall out.

Factors that increase your risk of periodontal disease include:

- Chronic stress

- Certain medications such as antidepressants, diuretics, high blood pressure meds, seizure-controlling meds, and calcium blockers

- Poor nutrition

- Fluctuating hormones

- Diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, inflammatory bowel disease, and HIV

- Teeth grinding

- Crooked or crowded teeth

- Tobacco use

- Genetics

Do you have bleeding gums? Come in for a visit so we can check your mouth and begin you on a treatment plan. All Coast Dental is located at 2180 Garnet Ave., Suite 1-K, in Pacific, CA 92109. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please visit allcoastdental.net or call 858-270-4904.

Aggressive Periodontal Disease

If you’re spitting a bit of pink in the sink while brushing your teeth then you may not be brushing enough. Bleeding gums are the first sign of gingivitis and though gingivitis is reversible, if left untreated it will advance to periodontitis. Periodontitis can affect one or many teeth and will cause inflammation around the tooth. Some people are more prone to periodontal disease than others, but our doctors at All Coast Dental encourage all of our patients to practice prevention.

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and bone that supports the tooth. If periodontitis is ignored the teeth may become loose and/or fall out. Periodontitis will cause the gum and bone to pull away from the teeth, forming large pockets. Bacteria leftover from food will then invade these pockets and infect the area. Periodontitis begins with plaque, so if your dental health is still in optimal condition, keep your teeth and gums as clean as possible by brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day.

Oral Care Habits and Bad Breath

The mouth is filled with good and bad bacteria. If the mouth is unclean, the bad kind will grow in excess, and potentially lead to gum disease and bad breath. It’s important to maintain adequate oral care to prevent such conditions. It’s one thing to have bad breath when waking up in the morning, but if it becomes persistent and begins to affect your everyday life, schedule an appointment with our doctors at All Coast Dental.

When foods are digested, the oils from these foods wander their way into the bloodstream, are carried through the lungs, and released through the breath. Changing your dietary habits can reduce bad breath but the food isn’t the only culprit. Other causes of bad breath, aside from lack of oral care include dry mouth, tobacco products, and chronic diseases such as diabetes. Regardless of what’s causing your bad breath, it’s best to get the condition under control before it gets worse.

Tooth Sensitivity

Teeth can grow to be sensitive for a variety of reasons, but the most common is lack of proper oral hygiene habits. Sensitive teeth may also be caused by poor dietary habits, and from brushing the teeth too hard. If your oral care routine isn’t up to par, or you that your gums are a little more tender than usual, our doctors at All Coast Dental can assist you in getting your periodontal and oral health back on track.

If you cringe while sipping hot or cold beverages, or become afraid to bite into an apple, you are likely a victim of tooth sensitivity. Sensitive teeth develop when the enamel that protects our teeth becomes thin, or when gums begin to recede from periodontal disease. Tooth sensitivity may come and go, but if it’s causing you pain, it’s important to seek help from one of our doctors at All Coast Dental to fix the problem.

If you have questions or concerns regarding tooth sensitivity, please give us a call. To learn about services provided at our practice, visit www.allcoastdental.net for more information. Diode Laser (Sol)

Dental diode lasers, sometimes called soft-tissue lasers, are utilized by our doctors at All Coast Dental to aid in cutting or contouring oral soft tissues. These types of lasers are capable of creating precise cuts in the gum tissue and other soft tissues while also eliminating bleeding at the site and reducing the healing time for the patient. The SOL Diode Laser is designed with the patient in mind.

Dental lasers such as the SOL is safe and effective for managing gum tissue during impressions for crowns or other procedures, removing inflamed gum tissues and aid in the treatment of gum disease. There are many advantages of laser dentistry because lasers allow for a more relaxed experience in the dental chair. Additionally, lasers can reduce symptoms and healing times as opposed to using dental drills and other traditional therapies.

Prevent Periodontitis

If you’ve been told you have symptoms of gingivitis, it’s time to start brushing better. Gingivitis occurs before periodontitis and unlike gingivitis, periodontitis is not reversible. Periodontitis is defined as inflammation around the tooth. This serious gum infection damages the soft tissue and bone that surrounds the tooth, eventually leading to decay. Our doctors at All Coast Dental want you to keep your permanent teeth forever, so allow us to tell you how you can prevent periodontitis.

Periodontitis begins with plaque – a sticky biofilm that wreaks havoc on tooth enamel. To prevent plaque buildup, the solution is simple – keep your mouth as clean as possible. In addition to visiting us twice a year for routine cleanings, you should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If you notice that your gums are bright red/purple, are receding, or if your gums are bleeding while brushing, call us immediately so we can treat the problem before it progresses.

If you have questions or concerns regarding periodontal disease, please give us a call. To learn about services provided at our practice, visit www.allcoastdental.net for more information. Gum Disease

Gum disease can be painful, unsightly, and can lead to disastrous dental health. At All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach, CA, we want our patients to know how gum disease happens, what it means, and how to avoid it.

Gum disease is a condition where the gums become irritated and unhealthy. They may be red, painful, swollen, and may bleed frequently. If left untreated, gum disease may cause teeth to fall out. It can also cause bad infections that may spread if not stopped.

Gum disease develops due to bad oral hygiene. When plaque and tartar build up, it irritates the gums and causes them to pull away from the teeth. This creates deep pockets where bacteria can hide and cause damage further down.

In order to prevent gum disease from becoming a reality, you must brush your teeth two to three times per day and floss once per day. Make sure to brush all surfaces of the teeth and your tongue. Each brushing session should take about two minutes. When flossing, be sure to floss between the contacts of all teeth in your mouth. In addition to home care, routine dental visits are also important. Your dentist can professionally clean your teeth and tell you when a spot is frequently being missed when you brush.

Gum disease can turn serious without any major signs. To learn more or to schedule your appointment with All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach, CA, call our office at (858) 270-4904 or visit our website, www.allcoastdental.net
